The board is sound, and has been glued into the Artist's original frame around the edges on the reverse. There is some very minor rounding the edges of the board at the corners, and some extremely small flecks of loss along the extreme edges in places, mostly in the upper corners. There is a small patch of possible mold or blooming to the brown pigment in the upper right quadrant. There is a light layer of surface dirt to the work, with one or two small spots of studio detritus. Subject to the above the work is in very good overall condition. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals no obvious signs of restoration or retouching. The work is held within its original white painted simple wood frame. Verso: There is glue residue around the edges. There are a few flecks of lifting paint to the edges. There are a few small flecks of loss scattered throughout, some of which are possibly inherent to the Artist's technique. Some of the impasto elements are slightly flattened. Catalogue Note

We are grateful to Martin Lanyon for his kind assistance with the cataloguing of the present work. With another work by the same hand to the reverse.  Patrick Delaney was at St Peter's Loft, the art school run by Lanyon in St Ives, during the 1950s.

'I believe that landscape, the outside world of things and events larger than ourselves is the proper place to find our deepest meanings…I want to make the point that landscape painting is not a provincial activity as it is thought to be by many in the United States, but a true ambition like the mountaineer who cannot see the clouds without feeling the lift inside them. These things take us in to places where our trial with forces greater than ourselves, where skill and training and courage combine to make us transcend our ordinary lives.' (Peter Lanyon, ‘Some Aspects in Modern British Painting: an Artist’s Point of View’, lecture for the British Council in Czechoslovakia, 27 January 1964)
