Catalogue Note

“Srihadi approaches the subject of dance and dancers from the perspective of the spirituality contained within the movements and postures. He does not study dance through the physical movements alone. He portrays the life of dancers off-stage as an alternative perspective.”1
- Suwarno Wisetrotomo and Farida Srihadi

Among Srihadi’s favourite subjects were dancers, in an effort to capture the vibrant cultures that belie the spiritual and metaphysical condition of the Indonesian nation. The dancer above is painted against a field of burnt orange, reminiscent of the portraits of contemporary artist Alex Katz, allowing the golds and greens of her dress, headdress and fan to immediately capture our attention. In a voyeuristic act of synesthesia in movement, we see her dance glow in the embracing warmth of ochre-coloured sand.

This work has been authenticated by the artist.
