Among Srihadi’s favourite subjects were dancers, in an effort to capture the vibrant cultures that belie the spiritual and metaphysical condition of the Indonesian nation. The dancer above is painted against a field of burnt orange, reminiscent of the portraits of contemporary artist Alex Katz, allowing the golds and greens of her dress, headdress and fan to immediately capture our attention. In a voyeuristic act of synesthesia in movement, we see her dance glow in the embracing warmth of ochre-coloured sand.
