Catalogue Note

Senaka Senanayake is one of Sri Lanka’s most popular living artists with over a hundred solo shows to his credit, and numerous group exhibitions across the world including Europe, East Asia, Australia and North Africa. Senanayake achieved international acclaim at the early age of ten when he held his first solo exhibition in New York at the Asia House Art Gallery. He received his formal training in art from Yale University graduating in Art and Architecture. He is best known for his vibrant canvases depicting women, lush landscapes and more recently endangered flora and fauna from his native country Sri Lanka. This present work combines all these elements and comments on the theme of endangered wildlife and destruction of the natural world, but through these positive and mesmerising paintings. The artist draws his aesthetic inspiration from the environs of his studio in Colombo, where he is surrounded by the iridescent scenery of the many tropical gardens.
