Description

  • Jade
carved seated with wings neatly folded back over the body, the crested head raised and turned sharply to look over its back and clasping a leafy peony spray in its beak, the stone of very pale celadon-white colour with a light russet skin 

Condition

There is a tiny bruise to the petal of the peony otherwise the jade carving is in overall good condition.

A slightly larger jade phoenix grasping a peach spray in its beak, was included in the exhibition Jades from China, The Museum of East Asian Art, Bath, 1994, cat. no. 337; and a white and russet jade version, with the bird grasping a lingzhi and peach spray in its beak, from the Brian S. McElney collection, was included in the exhibition Chinese Jade: Stone for the Emperors, Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, Victoria, 1986, cat. no. XXV.
