Catalogue Note

FIRST EDITION OF TOLSTOY'S FIRST BOOK, which was approved by the censor two weeks before Childhood and Boyhood. It includes Tolstoy's Sebastopol Sketches, based on his personal experiences as a soldierĀ in the Crimean War, which were later adapted for use in War and Peace. The first story in the volume, Nabeg [The raid], debates the nature of courage. Tolstoy became a noted pacifist later in life.
