First edition. presentation copy with a fine inscription to a close friend on the front free endpaper: "—Not to mention the Rhumerit Martiniqueist, / with the milk punches, the vanilla sticks, / the invitations to tomorrows champagne; / the walks, the Greek restaurants, / — Not to mention the Chamber of Deputies — / Nor Alèsia, / Nor Chartres, Nor In le Havre, / Nor An Hotel Room in Chartres / Nor, finally Alèsia, & work: / With thanks & love / from the author / Malcolm Lowry." Below the inscription is a small ink sketch of a window or door.

The inscription refers to Lowry's short stories "In le Havre" and "Hotel Room in Chartes," which opens with a scene set on the rue d'Alèsia in Paris.
