Catalogue Note

"I have so thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated the fine work you have done in illustrating my dog story, that I am writing to tell you so." Philip R Goodman was an American painter known for his depictions of wildlife and outdoor scenes. He did the illustrations for London's Call of the Wild, perhaps his best-known work, at the age of 22, and went on to do Roosevelt's African Game Trails, as well as illustrations in numerous magazines, as well as several covers for The Saturday Evening Post. London not only congratulates Goodman on his work, but also expressed regret about a printing error which results in an illustration being misidentified: "All your types — both men and dogs — are most excellent. My favorite is 'It was to the death.' Too bad they printed 'Hal' under your picture of picture of the Scotch half-breed! Indeed, indeed, I like what you have done. Sincerely yours, Jack London."
