Catalogue Note

first edition, presentation copy: "To Mr. and Mrs. Charles F. Williams wishing them all good things always. Very sincerely Ernest Hemingway Gritti Hotel Venice 28/5/54."

Hemingway was fond of Venice, once remarking, "How can anyone live in New York, when there is Venice and Paris?" At the time he inscribed the present book, he and Mary were just a few months removed from surviving a plan crash in Uganda and still recuperating.
