Description

  • Marco Ricci
  • A rocky landscape with stone masons working in a quarry, a shepherd and his flock in the distance
  • tempera on paper, laid down on canvas

Catalogue Note

Executed in the artist's characteristically cool palette, this landscape is typical of Marco Ricci's style.  With natural stone platforms and wind-stripped trees, the painting recalls Ricci's Mountainous Landscape with Figures and a Cascade, of similar dimensions, in a private collection, Venice.1 While Ricci often included shepherds, cowherds and peasants in his landscapes, the inclusion of quarry workers is more unusual.  Dwarfed by their natural surroundings, the industrious workers are reminiscent of the loggers in the artist's Woodland Landscape with Woodcutters in the Fondazione Custodia, Paris.2
