Condition

The painting is in lovely condition, presenting a clean and clear image, and is ready to hang in its present state. The canvas has an old glue relining, which is stable, and the paint surface is well preserved beneath a clear, fresh varnish. The flesh tones remain very well preserved and largely untouched. Inspection under UV light reveals four lines of very fine retouching to craquelure lines in her buttock and two small areas of retouched loss in the back of her neck. There are minor retouches to the lateral edges of the painting and an area of retouching in the upper left background of approximately 3cm across. There is a possible small repaired hole with retouching in the background above the figure's left leg. Offered in an elaborately carved giltwood frame. In good condition.

Catalogue Note

Jollain studied under Jean-Baptiste Marie Pierre, won second prize at the Prix de Rome in 1754, and in 1765 entered the Académie Royale as a history painter. Judging by the skill and subject matter of the present work, he was also a specialist of small-scale, seductive mythological scenes. His notable commissions include those for the chapel at Fontainbleau.
