Description

  • Portrait of a man wearing a lace ruff
  • inscribed upper left: (A)n  16../A..tatis
  • oil on panel

Condition

Panel has been cradled. The surface is under a slightly dirty and uneven varnish. There are two vertical joins that run from top to bottom at either side of the figure. These have separated slightly and are visible to the naked eye. There are some tiny losses and liftings in the background, mostly at the righty side, with a few on costume. There are two old discolored retouchings, one on left jaw and the other on right cheek. Examination under UV: it is difficult to see through the old varnish. The only area that fluoresces is the aforementioned retouch on left jawline. This painting would benefit from restoration to address the areas of lifting and the tiny losses. In a carved and gilt wood frame with minor losses.
