Description

  • Michele Tosini, called Michele di Ridolfo del Ghirlandaio
  • Allegory of Charity
  • oil on panel, in a carved and gilt wooden frame

Condition

The panel is made of a single vertical board, with an addition of approximately 6cm at the upper edge. The horizontal join is faintly visible on the face of the painting, as seen in the catalogue imgage. The panel has a very minor vertical bow, which is addressed with a horizontal baton on the reverse at the upper edge and another that has since been removed on the lower edge. There is a vertical crack running 2/3 the length of the reverse of the panel from the lower edge. Evidence of this is visible in some vertical lines of cracking to the paint surface on the face, as visible in the catalogue image. The paint surface overall is been a little rubbed, and there are old retouches scattered throughout, some of which have slightly discolored over time. Inspection under UV reveals retouching scattered throughout the figures and the background. Offered in an impressive and elaborately carved giltwood frame.

Catalogue Note

The composition must have found great commercial success in Florence as it is known in several versions, all based on the same cartoon, with some including a landscape in the background. The present version should be considered among the best of these different versions.
