Condition

This painting is executed on a panel which is comprised of two pieces of wood brought together by a single horizontal join located at the bottom third of the composition. The panel itself is flat, stable, and cradled on the reverse with no beveling. This picture has a dirty varnish which is confirmed by UV examination. UV light also reveals a few scattered retouches, namely along the Madonna's cheek, jaw, and also along the panel join. The painting appears to have undergone two minor restoration campaigns as there is retouching both beneath the varnish (along the join) and also above the varnish (minor touches along the edge of the composition). Otherwise the painting is in very fresh condition and could respond to a light cleaning. There do not appear be any major holes or damages. Furthermore the landscape and the overwhelming majority of the figures are in very good condition. In a carved giltwood frame.

Catalogue Note

While the figure of the Virgin is clearly indebted to Giovanni Bellini, the author of this charming painting appears to also have been influenced by other Venetian painters in that circle, including Nicolò Rondinelli, Benedetto Diana and Luca Antonio Busati.
