Condition

The following condition report has been provided by Karen Thomas of Thomas Art Conservation LLC., 336 West 37th Street, Suite 830, New York, NY 10018, 212-564-4024, info@thomasartconservation.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This painting is in sound condition overall, with a patina that is consistent with the advanced age of the picture. The vertically grained, very thin wood panel support displays a mild convex warp. Old damages are primarily evident as tiny but deep dents and small scratches clustered in Christ's torso as well as a few scattered gouges. Extensive retouching in the flesh passages addresses wear, particularly in the mid and dark tones. and the network of minuscule aging cracks. The highlights remain better preserved. On the reverse, a wax-containing coating is cloudy and scuffed. The verso surface could be improved to allow better reading of the decorative motifs.
