The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. Although this work appears to have a recent lining, the cracking and instability are very noticeable, particularly in the upper sky. There is also cracking and some lightly restored losses in the foreground. There is restoration between the child with the axe and the seated woman in the lower right, and in the rigging in the boats in the lower left. There is a broad campaign of restoration in the sky. The restoration should be re-examined and the lining reversed. Retouches would still be necessary, particularly across the top of the sky, but they could certainly be better applied.
