  • The judgment of Paris
  • oil on canvas, unfamed
  • 101.5cm by 128cm

Provenance

Anonymous sale, Paris, Sotheby's, 21 June 2012, lot 40;
Where acquired after the sale by the present collector.

Condition

The canvas has been relined and the surface is under a dull varnish. The relining process has resulted in the paint surface having been somewhat pressed, however it is generally well retained and detail remains good and coloration is strong. Examination under UV light reveals scattered retouches to the figures including on the face, torso and arm of Venus, and on the lower back and legs of the standing figure at far right. Other retouches are scattered here and there in sky and background areas, and along the bottom edge.
