Condition

The panel is uncradled. There are two horizontal panel joins that run through the center of the composition. Please note that the image in the printed catalogue was taken prior to recent restoration along the bottom join, which had previously become slightly separated, and along which there were some minor losses. This has now been skillfully attended to and the join is not obvious to the naked eye (see the image online for the current appearance). Overall there is quite good retention of the paint surface with lovely detail in the figures and strong coloration. Examination under UV light reveals retouching along the aforementioned lower join. There are additional older retouches in the background foliage, and some reinforcements of the dark outlines on the river god at left, on the hair of the Danaides, and on the urns. A few other very small scattered retouches on the bodies of the Danaides and some in foreground. This painting is presentable as is and there is no need for further work. Offered in a black wood frame with gilt scrolled decoration at the corners.
