Description

  • Jacob Willemsz. de Wet the Elder
  • The finding of Moses
  • oil on panel, en grisaille

Provenance

P. Smith van Gilder;
By whom sold, London, Christie's, 18 November 1929, lot 46, to Stenmann.

Condition

On a flat, stable panel with beveling at all four edges. There is one horizontal batten on the reverse of the panel, which is uncradled and made up of two horizontal boards, the second of which is a two inch original strip at the upper edge. Inspection under UV light reveals a few isolated strokes of retouching to the sky at left. Otherwise no retouches of any significance are visible. The unframed edges of the panel suggest a light cleaning might reveal a slightly brighter palette, but the painting can be hung in its current state. Offered in a carved giltwood frame.
