Description

  • Jacob Gerritsz. Cuyp
  • Portrait of a young boy and dog in a landscape
  • oil on panel

Condition

The panel is stable, flat, and cradled; it is unbeveled and made up of two vertical panels. There are two minor losses to the panel of 1/8 in. to the upper edge. There is a fine retouched crack, running vertically from the upper to lower edge and another very fine retouched crack running 3 in. vertically from the upper edge. There is a fine scratch with retouching running the length of the dogs proper left leg. The paint surface is a little dirty beneath an old milky varnish. There are scattered minor losses scattered throughout, notably in the red background curtain. There is eveidence of frame abrasion, some of which has been retouched and further old retouches and retouched losses throughout, confirmed under UV light. Many of these have discolored over time. The painting would benefit from a clean and the old retouching reapplied. Offered in an elaborately carved gilt wood frame with knocks and losses.
