Copper plate is flat. The paint surface is under a very dirty and discolored old varnish. There are some paint losses: on the dark drapery on the figure at far right; on the head of the kneeling woman; a diagonal line of paint loss between these two figures on their arms; one in the foreground lower left, and a couple on the figures at far left side. Other small losses and scuffing at extreme edges, probably from rubbing of the frame. There are some old scattered retouches in the sky that have discolored and are visible to the naked eye, and an area at lower right where the varnish has blanched and appears cloudy. Despite these issues, one can see that there is still very good retention of the paint surface in most of the picture and very nice detail in the figures and landscape. Examination under UV: the old varnish is difficult to see through; in addition to the old retouches already mentioned that are visible to naked eye, there appear to be a few others in the foreground area at lower left. This painting has not been attended to in a long time and would benefit from a light cleaning and sensitive restoration which should result in a very attractive image. Offered in an elaborately carved and gilt wood and plaster frame with some nicks and losses to the corners.
