Condition

Oil on canvas, not lined. The picture surface is in generally good condition. There is a stable web of almost imperceptible craquelure over the picture surface; it is slightly more visible in the sky, as are the stretcher bar marks on the right and top edges. The picture is fresh and clean. Under UV light, there are small retouches to the upper left corner and a few scattered dots in the right section of the sky, mainly to address the stretcher bar marks. The red pigments remain active and fluoresce bright orange. The picture is in generally good condition and ready to hang.

Catalogue Note

This work was painted in 1880, after Firmin-Girard moved to Farcy-les-lys, a village alongside the Seine, close to the Fontainebleau forest. Firmin-Girard often painted the nearby parks and gardens. The park in which these children play in located in the castle of the family Sansal, in downtown Farcy-les-lys.
