Oil on canvas, with an old, sympathetic lining. The picture surface is in generally good condition aside from three patches along the extreme edges that are likely cleaning tests that have been retouched and varnished over. The 2 inches at extreme left and right sides are either later additions or they are the sides of Maris’ canvas which have been turned to face the front. No original paint layer on either of these sides is visible. Under UV light, the left and right edges both fluoresce heavily. Newer retouching is visible around the aforementioned cleaning tests. There is scattered, older retouching through the clouds and central area of the work, though this is likely the result of the artist’s working method. In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above.
