Description
- John Frederick Herring Sr.
- The racehorse "Whiteface" with groom J. Gilham
- oil on panel
Provenance
Robert Taylor Esq.
Condition
Oil on panel. There are two rows of cradles that have been screwed into the original panel approximately 4 inches from the left and right sides extending vertically. The picture surface is clean and fresh. There are some minor, very light discolorations scattered in the right half of the work, perhaps some sort of studio dirt. There is a textured layer of craquelure to the groomer's jacket and clothing as well as two areas of the grass around him. Under UV light, the majority of the left side of the work, as well as the horse and the landscape, are covered by a green fluorescing varnish. There is some removal of the varnish in the trees behind the horse; in the horse's white face and legs; and in the sky. There is one dot of retouching at the center of the horse's back. The aforementioned minor accretions fluoresce very lightly under UV light. In overall good condition and ready to hang.
