Description

  • Harry Hall
  • "Underhand," Winner of the Northumberland Plate, with Aldcroft Up, Mr. A. Biggs, Mr. J. Fobert (Trainer) and Mr. G. Foster (Owner)
  • signed H. Hall and dated 1860 (lower right)
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

Arthur Ackermann & Son, Ltd., London (according to a label on the stretcher)

Condition

Oil on canvas, lined. The surface is clean, though somewhat flattened by the lining. There is a stable web of almost imperceptible craquelure throughout the work and paint separation, visible especially in the horse's hind quarters. Under UV light, there are scattered retouches especially in the sky. There are lines of retouching in the horse to address the aforementioned craquelure. The reds in the figure's faces remain active and fluoresce.
