The canvas has an old glue relining which is stable. The paint surface is in generally good condition and is secure under a yellowed, uneven varnish with some discolored retouching visible to the naked eye in raking light, notably in the faces, ground and background foliage. Some minor alligatoring is visible in the tree. There are some minor surface scratches and abrasions and small drips of white deposit on the surface of the varnish upper right, though these do not affect the reading of the painting. Two small losses visible at lower right. Inspection under UV reveals patches of infilled losses on the lower edge, possible strengthening to the foliage in the upper section and retouches to the faces.
