Condition

Oil on canvas, lined. There is a patch, 4 by 5 1/2 inches, on the verso that corresponds to the area in the sitters proper right elbow. The surface appears clean and is covered by a stable web of very fine craquelure. Under UV light, the majority of the work is covered by a green fluorescing varnish. There are scattered lines of retouching to address craquelure in the subject's face and scattered in his collar and chest of his jacket. Additional craquelure retouching in the book at left. A Y shaped probable tear with associated retouching visible just above the sitter's proper right elbow. Scattered additional dots and dashes of retouching to address abrasion throughout this picture's composition.
