Description

  • Amsterdam School, second quarter of the 17th century
  • Portrait of a Burgomeister
  • inscribed upper left: AE. TATIS. 49 / AN. 1639
  • oil on panel

Condition

Oil on panel. Three vertical panels are held together by small wooden blocks adhered to the verso. Panel cracks are visible throughout. There are discolored retouches visible above the subject's head; in the left side of his ruff; and scattered in his forehead down the bridge of his nose and in his cheek below his proper right eye. There is thinness throughout the background as well as areas of alligatoring in the black of his dress. Under UV light, the previously mentioned retouchings fluoresce. The majority of the work is covered by a thick green fluorescing varnish.
