Catalogue Note

The composition of this work follows that of a larger oil on canvas by Jean Raoux, painted in 1723 for Lothar Franz von Schönborn’s Schloss Weißenstein in Pommersfelden, Bavaria. Byss was court painter to the Schönborn family and also appointed by Lothar Franz von Schönborn as attendant to the family’s painting collection at Pommersfelden.  After the death of Lothar in 1729, Byss entered into the service of his successor, Friedrich Karl.
