Catalogue Note

This is one of only a handful of portraits known to have been executed by Edwaert Collier, an artist best known for his still-life paintings. The likely pendant to this work, A Portrait of a Lady, Standing Half Length, Wearing a Black Dress, correlates in both size and composition and was sold at Sotheby's Amsterdam in 2004.1
