Description
- John Craxton, R.A.
- Cottages in Dorset
- signed
- crayon on paper
- 35.5 by 50cm.; 14 by 19¾in.
- Executed in the 1950s.
Provenance
The Artist, from whom acquired by the previous owner in the 1950s, and thence by descent to the present owners
Condition
The sheet is free floating. There are pin holes in each of the four corners, with three further pin holes at the upper left of the composition and one more at the upper right edge. These appear to be consistent with the Artist's working method. There are three or four small instances of rubbing to the paper at the centre of the composition, most probably in keeping with the nature of the Artist's techniques and materials. There is a very small loss at the upper centre of the extreme right edge which is not visible when the work is viewed in the frame. The paper has faded and the extreme edges, which have been protected from light by the frame rebate, are a stronger colour. There is some surface dirt to the sheet but the crayon is bright. The work would benefit from being housed in an acid free mount.
The work is held behind glass and presented in a small gilt frame.
