Description
- Dame Lucie Rie
- Large Vase
- impressed with Artist's seal
- stoneware with a manganese and sgraffito decoration
- height: 24cm.; 9in.
- Executed circa 1950.
Provenance
Private Collection, U.S.A.
Condition
There appears an old restoration to the side of the side of the vessel, involving the outer white neck of the vase, and running down the side into the sgraffito decoration. This has been restored, and the restoration makes it difficult to ascertain the extent of the original damage, but has been executed to a good standard, and is only really visible under ultraviolet light. Elsewhere there is a light crackle to areas of the white glaze, and some instance of minor surface dirt.

'It is not easy to describe her simplicity of approach and the delicacy of her work ... Her skills are so profound that her work appears simpler and simpler, while in fact becoming more and more complex.'
