Catalogue Note

FIRST COLLECTED EDITION. Johann Amerbach was active as a printer in Basel from 1478, and continued until his death in 1513. He had business links with other printers (to whom he lent types) and publishers, including Koberger in Nuremberg. Sebastian Brant, professor of law and poetry at Basel, was one of Amerbach's scholarly editors, and the text for this edition was partly supplied by Jakob Wimpfeling from an earlier printed edition; Amerbach had asked for the manuscript at Speyer Cathedral but in Wimpfeling's opinion the printed edition was more reliable, and he also arranged for Amerbach to borrow a copy of Petrarch from Johannes Trithemius of Sponheim (The Correspondence of Johann Amerbach, Ann Arbor, 2000, letters 34-36).

ISTC records nearly 300 copies.
