Catalogue Note

"This is the last edition of the Theatrum published by Jan Moretus for the Plantin Press on behalf of the heirs of Ortelius. During the year 1601 the heirs of Ortelius had sold the plates and rights of the Theatrum to Jan Baptist Vrients of Antwerp, who published the Spanish edition the next year. The 1601 edition is almost the same as that of 1595, with the exception of three extra maps with signatures 25*, 25** and 25***. For these three maps, which first appeared in the French edition of 1598, the Latin text was not ready when the printing began" (Van der Krogt).
