Nicolaus Ketelaer and Gerardus de Leempt are considered the second printing establishment in Utrecht, where the first Dutch press appeared in around 1471. They are the first named Dutch printers and they worked together from 1473 to perhaps 1475; most of their 30 odd books are undated, as here. Gerardus later printed at s' Hertogenbosch and Nijmegen. For another work from their press, see lot 348 [Thomas a Kempis].

This is one of two editions of St Jerome's lives of famous men printed around this time; as both are undated, their priority cannot be established.
