Catalogue Note

Harpsfield's Dialogi sex "was nothing less than the detailed rebuttal of two of the greatest protestant historical works of the era, the Historia ecclesiae Christi, known as the Magdeburg Centuries, and John Foxe's Acts and Monuments" (ODNB). The work was written during Harpsfield's long incarceration for refusing to swear the oath of supremacy, and smuggled to his editor Alan Cope who arranged for its publication under his own name in Antwerp.
