folio (271 x 183mm.), title within engraved border (McKerrow & Ferguson 131) with eleven portraits of Biblical and British monarchs (including Queen Elizabeth, William the Conqueror, and Henry VIII; earlier state of the title omitting the names), second part with separate title page within woodcut border (McKerrow and Ferguson 110), separate pagination for second part, woodcut initials and illustrations (some by Virgil Solis), black letter, a few near contemporary signatures or scribblings, late nineteenth-century straight grained brown morocco, gilt edges, new maroon endpapers, title leaf and possibly some of the other preliminary leaves apparently supplied from another copy or copies, borders of title slightly shaved at upper and lower edges, [Pi]A2 cut down and inlaid, [Pi]A6 cut down and mounted, A1 extended, occasional staining (particularly towards end), a few repaired tears at margins, some headlines slightly shaved, 2D1 slightly short (? possibly supplied), 3H4 possibly supplied, four leaves from the table at the end torn and repaired, colophon leaf at the end extended, no final blank at the end (c6 cancelled as called for by ESTC)

"Despite his wishes Bateman's very large and important antiquarian and archaeological collections were dispersed within a generation. Sheffield Museum eventually purchased archaeological material on loan there from 1876; other artefacts were auctioned by Sotheby's in 1893, and the remainder is said to have been sold in 1895 after the death of his son and heir, Thomas William Bateman" (ODNB).
