Catalogue Note

The Bayrische Hiesel, or Bavarian Robin Hood, was Matthias Klostermayr, a poacher and outlaw who was captured and executed in 1771. He became a folk hero and many tales and songs were written about him, in particular by the Romantic novelist Ludwig Tieck.

The serial killer Melchior Hedloff, from Breslau, was executed in 1654 for rape and murder; he confessed to killing 251 people. This flyer was issued at the time to disseminate the news of his execution; he is portrayed carrying a gun and described as a "Wildschütz" (poacher).
