Catalogue Note
THE DEDICATION COPY. Volume 1, which has the printed dedication "to the most illustrious princess, Charlotte, queen of Great Britain", is inscribed in a secretarial hand on the endleaf "The Queen", and has her bookplate. All the other volumes have her bookplate, and with the exception of vol.6 are similarly inscribed. In addition they have the signature on the title of Sophia (the queen's daughter).
After her death most of Queen Charlotte's extensive library and personal possessions, left to her four youngest daughters (including Sophia), were sold at auction in the first few months of 1819 in order to clear her debts.
The Naturalist's Miscellany includes illustrations of birds, fish, butterflies, lithophytes, insects, reptiles and other animals.
