Imperial folio (461 x 318mm.), 325 leaves (of 326, without the blank leaf), [*, **6 ***8; a6 b-d4 e-h6 i2 k4 l-n6 o2 p-q6 r-y4 z6 aa-cc6 dd2 ee6 ff4 gg-ii6 kk2 ll4 mm-zz A-K6 L6-2 M6], gothic type, xylographic title-page, 4- to 14-line initials in red and blue, red initial strokes, numerous woodcut illustrations throughout by Wolgemuth, Pleydenwurff and workshop, including portraits, maps and town views, 5 leaves of De Sarmacia (without conjoint blank) bound between folios CCLXVI and CCLXVII, a few early annotations (some by Villanus) including some in Greek, CONTEMPORARY NUREMBERG BINDING of blind-stamped calf over square wooden boards (Kyriss 112, Adler), title stamped at head of upper cover, metal centre- and cornerpieces, two clasps, a few marginal repairs (affecting woodcuts of Florence and Basel, without loss), a couple of small stains on world map, map of Europe lightly stained, rebacked and a few other repairs to binding

with a facsimile of the German text printed in December 1493 (Leipzig, 1933), copy number 427, vellum binding; together 2 volumes

Catalogue Note

A tall copy in a contemporary Nuremberg binding. The bindery, one of several secular Nuremberg workshops listed by Kyriss (112-118), had previously been linked to the printshop of Anton Koberger. It was active from around 1477 to 1514.
