Catalogue Note

Gerard B. Allen (1813-1887) was born in Ireland and came to St. Louis aged 23.  He soon owned two sawmills, then went into the iron business, and was executive to various steamboat companies.  Positions with life and fire insurance companies followed, the Bank of the State of Missouri, and the North Missouri Railroad; he was reportedly the wealthiest man in St. Louis.  He married in 1871 as his second wife Eugenia Paschall Carr.
