Catalogue Note

A lord (nayika) sits with his knees bound interrupted from meditation by the appearance of the sakhi (confidante) of his beloved - delivering a message.  His chamber a brilliant cinnabar red reflecting the emotional intensity of the encounter - a rolled back curtain reveals them at conversation.  He listens intently as she delivers her message.  A handmaiden stands outside the chamber - attentive - holding a golden tray.   Within very finely delineated white-marble turreted architecture - the flat primary colors of the adjoining compartments creating an abstracted visual counterpoint.  The dark sky is blue-black and in turmoil.  The painting with orange outer borders with black ruled lines.
