Condition

The medium is oil on canvas. The canvas is not lined. The edges of the canvas are exposed in the current framing, the edges of the canvas are lined with fabric tape. There are pinholes visible in the extreme corners. There is excellent impasto throughout, with some craquelure in the more thickly painted areas. In the small areas where there have been losses to the impasto, there is some white inpainting which is very well blended into the composition. These small scattered areas do fluoresce under UV. The colors are strong and the work presents very well.

Catalogue Note

The present work is a clear homage to H. Claude Pissarro's grandfather Camille, reprising the latter's 1903 composition The Jetty at Le Havre, Morning Sun, High Tide (The Dixon Gallery and Gardens, Memphis, Tennessee) but with H. Claude's own, more modern touch. Though born into a family of artistic legacy, H. Claude's rigorous training at the Ecole du Louvre and the prestigious Ecole Nationale Supérieure, combined with his receptivity to the more avant-garde trends of his contemporaries, led to a successful career as both a painter and an instructor. His international reputation led the Eisenhower White House to commission an official portrait of the President from him in 1959.
