Condition

The medium is oil on canvas. The canvas is not lined. The work is in very good overall condition. There is a dent to the canvas about 2inches in diameter in the shoulder of the woman and surrounding background. The canvas is very slightly slack on the stretcher. There is very nice impasto. The canvas has been left bare in some parts, though this does not detract from the overall aspect of the work. Under UV: there is no apparent inpainting. The colors are fresh and bright, the work presents very well.

Catalogue Note

This work is a preparatory study for the monumental mural by Martin, commissioned in 1932 to decorate the Escalier d'honneur of the Mairie of the 5th arrondissement in Paris. The mural is made up of five panels, each depicting children, families and couples around the iconic central fountain of the Jardin de Luxembourg. The group represented in the present work can be seen distinctly in the foreground of the second panel from the right.
