Condition

The medium is bronze with green and red/brown patina. The work is in good overall condition aside from a few small spots of apparent oxidation, mostly in recessed areas and a few minor surface scratches: under the proper right shoulder blade; at her top left side near her underarm; at the side of her proper right thigh. There is a small loss to the patina where the torso meets her upper thighs. There are a few stray specs and hair's width lines of white accretion on the head, minor rubbing at some of the sharper protruding elements, and some minor surface dust. The work presents very well. The dimensions of the base are: L11 1/2 x W8 x H1 1/2 inches.

Catalogue Note

Faunesse debout was first cast in an edition of 8, beginning in 1890 at the request of Rodin himself. Following his death, the Musée Rodin continued casting, first with Alexis Rudier between 1927 and 1945, and then with Georges Rudier from 1953 to 1963 for the edition of the present work. There are several variants of the sculpture, each with differing levels of detail in the rock; additionally Rodin worked this subject at least three times in marble.
