Condition

The work is in very good condition. The bronze features a dark brown patina. There is minor surface dirt in the crevices and some gentle rubbing to the patina across the palm and to the side of the sleeve. There is very light surface scratches commensurate with age.

This sculpture likely depicts the artist's own right hand. Picasso also modeled a left hand on two occasions during this period, both titled Main, the first in 1949 and the second in 1950 (Werner Spies, op. cit. nos. 340 & 348, respectively).
