Condition

The verso features an inscription: " Le dessin ci-contre est un dessin original de mon grand père Paul Cezanne. Jean-Pierre Cezanne." Executed on cream wove paper which has been hinged to a mount along the top edge of its verso. The left edge of the sheet has been cut. There are 2 pin holes visible at center and upper left. There are 2 hard vertical creases to the extreme right of the sheet, running parallel with the edge, as well as an associated 1 inch tear running along the top of the crease at right and extending diagonally towards the extreme right edge. Also a few minor nicks to the bottom right edge of the sheet. The sheet is gently time-stained and a bit dirty with very faint stains scattered throughout the composition. There are also some minor scuffs to the center right of the sheet. Overall this work is in fair condition.

Catalogue Note

The present work is a study for the illustration for Molière's comedy Tartuffe and is accompanied by some sketches thought to be done by the artist's son. There are other examples of Paul Jr. working alongside his father in sketchbooks held in the collection of the Art Institue of Chicago.
