Condition

This bronze has a dark brown patina which is nicely aged. There is some minor rubbing to the face and surface scratches which are consistent with age. There are minor accretions and spots of verdigris to the front of both front legs and the figure's chest. The bronze is in very good condition.

Catalogue Note

The present work is considered to be one of the most important sculptures from Masson's second Surrealist period, developed during his early years in America. It has been written, "Both in terms of the title and morphology it further expands the themes of the anthropomorphic furniture that the artist worked on at Lyon-La-Forêt on his return from Spain and in America" (Roger Passeron, op. cit., p. 84).
