Catalogue Note

Torse debout was once in the collection of Joseph H. Hirshhorn, the founding donor of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. Having emigrated from Latvia at the age of six, Hirshhorn began his Wall Street career as a young man and soon proved himself to be a shrewd investor, making his fortune in the mining and oil businesses. He amassed an impressive collection of nineteenth- and twentieth-century paintings and sculpture, including works by Rodin, Picasso, Calder and Matisse. The present lot joined his collection in 1964, and was donated to the Smithsonian Insitution along with the majority of his collection in 1966.
