Condition

Executed on cream wove paper which has not been laid down. There is a repaired vertical tear to the top edge of the paper, measuring no longer than 3 in. long. There are two other much shorter repaired tears, each no longer than 1/2 in. (one located at the right edge, and another to the top edge). There is light foxing scattered around the composition. There is minor creasing to the lower right edge. The lower and right edges are unevenly cut. The work is in good condition. Dated 1914 and numbered Be/Vi 4 (on the verso.

Catalogue Note

A frequent subject in Kirchner's work, Hugo Biallowons was a dear friend of the artist who was killed in 1916 during the Battle of Verdun, the same battle which claimed the life of painter Franz Marc and countless others.
