Founded in 1860, Panerai was the official supplier of watches and precision instruments to the Regia Marina (the Royal Italian Navy), and later launched the brand for the civilian market in 1993. Watches produced during the rebirth of Panerai to the consumer market until it's acquisition by the Vendôme group in 1996/97, are often coined "pre-Vendôme" models.

The basic pre-Vendôme range consisted of some 44mm hand-wind watches with the classic 44mm Luminor case, and some 42mm Mare Nostrum chronographs.

The 'logo' Luminor is coined for it's distinctive "OP" signature on the dial.  A total of 889 watches were made, with 12 reworked as SlyTech Submersible 5218-201/A, 95 reworked as SlyTech Submersible 5218-205/A and 105 reworked as SlyTech Daylight 5218-207/A.
